I have read a LOT of Winston’s own writings. So this story comes straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. (From Churchill’s seven-volume monumental History of World War II.)

Churchill had sent a memo to the Royal Navy, asking about recruiting persons from India to cover the Navy postings that were needed to fill, saying that there were many bright young Indian men that could surely be found.

This sounds very enlightened, right? Contravening the rumors of his bigotry against non-Europeans, right?

But then he adds this to the end of the memo: But not too many, please!

I burst out laughing…
